Julia Salles is a Brazilian-French research-creator, living in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, since 2010. She holds a Doctorate in Communication studies from the joint program at Université du Québec à Montréal, Concordia University and Université de Montréal. Julia Salles has been teaching communication studies at Université de Montréal since 2017. Since 2022, she is also a research associate (conseillère principale en recherche) at ABCs Developmental Neuropsychology Laboratory, at Université de Montréal and CHU Sainte-Justine, where she contributes to projects at the intersection of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, social cognition, digital health and education.

Julia Salles has an extensive background in research-creation, digital storytelling, artificial intelligence (with focus on the use of chatbot for storytelling), and immersive technologies. She is the author of various publications, including the chapter Curating for communal engagement in VR, inThe changing face of VR: Pushing the boundaries of experience across multiple industries”, edited by Jordan Frith and Michael Saker (Vernon, 2022).

Julia Salles’ creations were supported by various international institutions such as the Canada Media Fund, SODEC, Spcine, Oi Futuro, Serrapilheira Institute. Julia Salles is a member of the programming committee of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (France) since 2015. In 2018, Julia Salles was selected for the prestigious Atelier Grand Nord Virtual Reality, organized by Sodec and Mutek. She has also worked in distinguished feature and short film festivals in France and Brazil (Cinéma du Réel, Mostra de São Paulo, Festival Rio BR, International Short Film Festival of São Paulo, Curta Cinema). In 2018, she was the curator of Mostra Bug, an exhibition occupying the 4 floors of Oi Futuro Flamengo for 1 month with international immersive and interactive experiences. From 2005 to 2008, she was in charge of the Label Europa Cinemas, awarded at the Venice Film Festival (Giornate degli Autori), Cannes Festival (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs), Berlinale and Karlovy Vary Festival.

Julia Salles has a bachelor degree in visual arts, a master’s degree in new media, both degrees obtained at the Université Paris VIII (France), and a doctorate in communication studies from the joint program of Université de Montréal, Concordia University and Université du Québec à Montréal (Canada).
